CBD: The Revolutionizing Medicine
Currently in Costa Rica, the College of Pharmacists has approved CBD as a medicinal supplement in the country.
CBD has great potential in the treatment of epilepsy and other diseases.
Editor- Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is one of the two most important cannabinoid components of the hemp plant and is present in different proportions depending on the strain. CBD contains medicinal properties, and thanks to this, a number of diseases and ailments can be treated, such as cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, among others that are under investigation.
The World Health Organization (WHO), in 2017, reported that CBD is not addictive, nor harmful to health and has potential therapeutic properties, likewise, they acknowledge not having identified any public concern about the use of CBD or accidents related to this substance.
While THC is the psychoactive component of hemp, and binds to some receptors in the human brain, it does not work the same as CBD, as CBD has anti-inflammatory properties far superior to THC and without the psychotropic effects, making it safe for any patient.
AM Prensa spoke with Dr. Carlos Rafael Hernández Cueva, a physician and surgeon in Costa Rica for the last 4 years, he has been an activist and has specialized in hemp medicine, he has also treated his patients with the hemp plant and is currently pursuing a master’s degree on this subject in the United States.
Dr. Hernandez pointed out that the main reason why CBD is a molecule that is revolutionizing medicine is because of its action on the endocannabinoid system, which is the body’s system of well-being, balance and equilibrium in our body, and CBD has a positive effect on it. At the moment we do not have another drug that can reach this system and act in such an integral and complete way.
Dr. Hernandez also told us that CBD is not usually recommended for children under 2 years old, and he also talked about the benefits of CBD in epilepsy.
“It is a reality, in fact, the first clinical studies that were made on the CBS, was to see its effectiveness in refractory epileptic syndromes, thanks to CBD, patients suffering from this disease, go from seizing about 300 per week to a couple of times,” said Hernandez.
He also mentioned the relationship between CBD, THC and people with oncological diseases.
“CBD could generate certain benefits in people who have oncological diseases and are undergoing chemotherapy, such as a decrease in anxiety and stress, let’s say because of the news of having received this diagnosis, it also helps with sleep problems.
However, in these cases, it is the THC that improves the conditions of these people, because many times what happens with chemotherapeutics is that they cause patients to lose their appetite, so THC opens that appetite, it also serves as an anti-inflammatory, for neuropathic pain. So many times in these cases, it is recommended to use a combination of both,” said Hernandez.
